Halloween for Hunger 2008

This October Students Sharing is gearing up for its seventh annual Halloween for Hunger. At the end of the month our students will notify their neighbors to stock up with canned goods as well as candy. On Halloween we will collect the cans and distribute them to local food pantries. Last year we collected 3.7 tons of food, and we hope to beat that record this year!

To get involved contact Phillip Westry at 410 662 8999.

Scholarships for Service

On April 29th SSC honored three high school students, a middle school teacher, a high school advisor and a community partner at it's annual awards ceremony held at Johns Hopkins Great Hall. Maryland's First Lady Catherine Curran O'Malley was present to bestow scholarships for service awards to three worthy high school youth.  This year the SSC also presented awards to a high school advisor of the year, Steve Young, a teacher and Club Head at Catonsville High School, the Operation AWARE teacher of the year, Isaiah Buchanan a teacher at Diggs Johnson Middle School and the Community Partner of the year was presented to the Baltimore Station.  The recipients of the awards have shown exemplary commitment to community service and youth leadership.

Three students also received scholarship for service awards. Geena Stith, a senior at the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute received special recognition through the Jake Fowley award of $1,000 towards her college tuition at Furman University.  The award is a memorial to Mr. Fowley who was a close friend of the Governor and his wife and provided support to the Coalition in its start-up phase.  Kelley Mason, a junior at Western High school received $500 and Shana Rochester, a senior at The Institute of Notre Dame received a $500 scholarship towards college costs.

Al Long and Derrick Phillips from community partner Baltimore Station.

Service Events 2007-2008

For our high school students, we offer a number of special service events throughout the year.  If you are interested in getting more of your community service hours done at once, you prefer big projects, or you want to help your community over the summer, we have many opportunities available.  Students can contribute their time at our annual service events through activities such as: preparing and serving food at the Spaghetti dinner for the Homeless in April, becoming a camp counselor at our middle school Summer Service Camp, trick-or-treating for cans at Halloween for Hunger, bringing holiday cheer to those in need at the Micah House Holiday Party, or speaking to state leaders while advocating for the homeless at our Lobby Day in Annapolis.  Please contact High School Coordinator Corey Gaber at cgaber@studentssharing.org for details.
