Students Sharing Coalition is a local non-profit organization whose
mission is to provide meaningful service-learning experiences to
students from a variety of backgrounds. By working with Students
Sharing, you will be able to earn hours towards fulfilling your
service-learning requirement while at the same time providing hope
to your community.
Operation AWARE
Operation
AWARE,
or AWAkening through
Real
World Experiences,
is an innovative service-learning program for middle school students
created and facilitated by Students Sharing Coalition, a non-profit
service-learning agency. We offer students in Baltimore City and
its surrounding communities a program that provides them with the
opportunity to earn up to 21 hours towards the state requirement of
75 service-learning hours for each student seeking a Maryland High
School diploma. Since 1998, Students Sharing has offered Operation
AWARE to Baltimore area middle school students--answering the call
to place greater emphasis on middle school service-learning
opportunities, so that fewer hours will be required during high
school years. The program follows the State Department of
Education's service-learning guidelines--including academic
preparation, service activities, and structured reflection. It is
our belief that in providing comprehensive, hands-on, experiential,
and educational initiatives focused on community issues, we are
fostering a generation of compassionate, informed and committed
individuals who will find long-term sustainable solutions to the
problems our communities are faced with today and in the future

Justice Circles - An After-School Program
Beginning
in 2007, Students Sharing Coalition has offered an after-school
program called Justice Circles, intended as a follow-up to Operation
AWARE. It is designed for those students who have completed the
semester of Operation AWARE and are enthusiastic about remaining
committed to the values set forth during that experience. While
Operation AWARE focuses on building civic awareness in the students
of their community and the power they have to change it, the Justice
Circle program focuses on building the students' community
organizing skills and knowledge, as well as developing self-esteem,
academic consistency, empathy, leadership, and other positive
individual characteristics. By connecting students to
community-based organizations, introducing them to people in the
community to whom they can go for help and support, and engaging the
students in the process of strategic planning, the Justice Circles
creates a network of youth and adult support that is focused on
positive efforts and effective change.
Justice
Circles aim to bridge the gap between the 7th grade
Operation AWARE program and SSC's opportunities for high school
students, in order to offer a "continuum of service." The
goal is to keep middle school students engaged through 8th
grade to continue to foster their passion for service and feeling of
empowerment. This dedication and involvement encourages
students to remain committed to completing their education
and becoming solid leaders in their schools and communities.
Students will be motivated to learn, teach, and act on issues when
they realize that they have the power to positively change their
world.

Summer Service
Action Camp
Our Youth Action Summer Service Camp is a summer service-learning
program for rising 7th, 8th and 9th graders. Camp programs are
focused on social justice issues that affect our communities. Each
two-week long session provides students with an introduction to
topics that are of interest to them, an opportunity to participate
in leadership training and teambuilding activities, and field trips
to engage in direct community service. Daily schedules also include
summer-fun activities such as arts and crafts, playground time, and games.
