Students Sharing began as a one-time advocacy project in 1993.  Since then, we have grown to work with more than 10,000 young people.

With more than 100 community partnerships, no Baltimore nonprofit offers a more diverse or comprehensive set of service-learning opportunities than we do.

The focus of our service and advocacy efforts is on issues related to social justice -- equity in socioeconomic and educational opportunities, providing for the immediate needs of the homeless and impoverished, and a health care system which ensures that every citizen has access to quality services, regardless of their individual circumstance.  We seek to engage students on these crucial issues, so that they might pursue and enact in their adult lives measures which will breech the divide between the

American promise and the American reality.

To afford students meaningful

service-learning opportunities, which

will enrich their personal development while addressing an urgent need in the community.

To encourage students and other community members to break down barriers, particularly across race and class lines, and work together to solve common problems.

To instill in students a sense that they have the power and talent to affect positive systemic change in their community.

A 12-week civic engagement initiative for seventh graders in Baltimore City Public Schools, OA is integrated into regular academic studies.  Through interactive lessons and service in the community, the program teaches youth basic concepts related to social justice and public advocacy, challenging them to raise their expectations for themselves and their community.

OA's direct successor, Justice Circles is an after-school program, largely facilitated to students who have participated in the previous program.  It explores social justice issues with greater openness and specificity, giving youth a space to discuss and plan service projects to address the community issues most relevant to their own lives.

Students Sharing's high school presence is predicated on the Student Executive Council (SEC) and our Students Sharing Clubs, offered at more than a dozen schools throughout Baltimore County.  Led by SEC students, youth participate each weekend in Community Action Projects, direct service initiatives through one of our partner sites (soup kitchens, nursing homes, etc.).
