Students Sharing's annual events rank among the organization's greatest successes.  "Lobby Day" and our "Spaghetti Dinner for the Homeless" have endured for nearly twenty years, and our newer events -- the Civic Engagement Awards and Halloween for Hunger -- have experienced tremendous success to date. This year Halloween for Hunger collected five tons of canned goods.

Students Sharing's oldest event, "Lobby Day in Annapolis" affords high school students the rare opportunity to voice concerns and strongly held beliefs directly to the representatives who shape state policy.  Advocating for social safety-net programs, largely focused around health care for the destitute, students research issues, prepare cogent arguments, and then respectfully communicate their positions.  In addition to meeting with state officials, students also rally at Lawyer's Mall with representatives from partner organizations, including Health Care for the Homeless and the National Association of Social Workers.

Each year, Students Sharing's "Spaghetti Dinner for the Homeless" serves more than three hundred of Baltimore's homeless, providing a free meal for those most in need of it.  The students cook and serve the food themselves, and enage guests throughout.  Additionally, complimentary hygiene kits and medical screenings are provided, as well as activities for children.  This past year, Students Sharing hosted the event at and in partnership with the Franciscan Center, an area shelter which serves more than nine thousand duplicated homeless, disabled, and elderly individuals each year.

Every spring, Students Sharing honors students who have displayed an exemplary commitment to the community with college scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000.  Additionally, the organization recognizes community partners, partner schools, and partner teachers who have gone beyond what can be reasonably asked of them in participating in our high school and middle school programs.  The ceremony is hosted each year by WJZ news anchor Marty Bass, and the student scholarships are awarded by the honorable Catherine O'Malley, First Lady of Maryland.

A student-led food drive, Halloween for Hunger is of considerable worth to Baltimore's hungry and destitute.  Each year, our Student Executive Council members organize simultaneous collections at multiple sites, including Catonsville and Towson.  Flyering select neighborhoods on October 28, youth return to collect food donations from front porches and steps on Halloween night.  Donations are consolidated, then presented to local shelters and soup kitchens.  This initiative produced more than two tons of food last year, and was honored in 2007 with the Weinberg Foundation's Aim for Excellence Award.
