Students Sharing forges new partnership with Buscaglia Foundation

The Leo Buscaglia Foundation (www.leobuscaglia.org), a California-based organization with national interests, recently awarded Students Sharing a first-time grant.  And the fit between the respective entities could not be better.  The mission of the Buscaglia Foundation is to build community spirit by helping people to help others.  Such is the essence of the work undertaken by Students Sharing, and it looks forward to a long and meaningful relationship in pursuit of that goal with the Buscaglia Foundation.

Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation awards grant to Students Sharing
$7,500 grant will fund Justice Circles

The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation, a community arm of Wells Fargo & Company, has awarded a first-time grant to Students Sharing.  The foundation's commitment to improve education and strengthen neighborhoods is an ideal fit for the 16 year-old youth nonprofit.  This funding will help to maintain the quality and breadth of Students Sharing's crucial Justice Circles program, impacting the lives of dozens of middle school youth.

Students seek food donations for Baltimore's needy during 8th Annual Halloween for Hunger drive

On October 24, students at four Baltimore-area locations (Towson, Timonium, Roland Park, and Catonsville) flyered over a thousand houses in pursuit of canned food donations.  On Halloween night, youth returned to collect the donations from residents' porches.  Last year's collection total exceeded 3.6 tons. This year our 150 volunteers smashed that record, collecting over 5 tons of food!      
2009 Civic Engagement Awards acknowledge community involvement

Each year, at its Annual Civic Engagement Awards Ceremony, Students Sharing honors high school youth who have displayed an exemplary commitment to community service and the pursuit of social justice.  WJZ personality Marty Bass serves as host, and First Lady of Maryland Katie O'Malley presents three students with $500 scholarships, in recognition of their civic accomplishments.  This year's student awardees were Mackenzie Cooke (Jake Fowley Memorial Scholarship), Charlotte Heyrman, and Eva Jacobs.
Students lobby in Annapolis to support the less fortunate

In conjunction with Health Care for the Homeless, the National Association of Social Workers, and the Homeless Persons Representation Project, students rallied at Lawyer's Mall in Annapolis to implore the state legislature not to cut funding to the social safety-net relied upon by Maryland's destitute.  Following the rally, the students relocated to the State House and the House of Delegates, where they had the opportunity to meet with eight Maryland lawmakers and four legislative aids.  Students asked pointed, nuanced questions that consistently revealed the depth of their preparation.
